I dreaded writing thank you notes when I was a kid. There were so many and it was hard to know what to write in each. “Thank you for…”
As much as I dreaded them, I think they are important to send and there are many good reasons to send them! Below is a list of the top 5 times I think it’s important to send a thank you card and why.
When receiving a gift
Whether you had a birthday party, wedding, housewarming, baby shower, however you received a gift, the gifter would LOVE a thank you card. They would be so happy to know how the gift made you feel, how you’re going to use it, and when you’ll be in touch next (especially if you don’t see them often).
After an interview
I know, we’re all digital now...why would sending a card in the mail after an interview be a good idea? Let me tell you, it works. I have interviewed at tech companies, big and small, and I often receive an offer when I send thank you cards to each person that interviewed me. That little touch in the mail is something special and different than other candidates aren’t doing! It physically puts you in front of the interviewer. AND you don’t have to write as much since cards only have so much space!
After being a house guest
Whether you stayed at someone’s house for a day or a week, they should get a thank you card. Chances are that they went out of their way to make you feel comfortable in their home and changed their routine to be with you. You don’t even have to pay for postage with this one if you don’t want to! You can leave them a nice card before you leave.
When someone writes you a letter of recommendation
A letter of recommendation is not easy to write! When I do them, I have to sit down, think about the person and why I would recommend them, and make sure I don’t leave anything out. I usually try to get a high-level list from them so I don’t miss any key moments and accomplishments. Since this is such a laborsome task, it’s best to write a thank you note after you receive the letter to thank them for their hard work!
To awesome neighbors
I’m not going to lie, we’re often the awesome neighbors and rarely get thank you notes. BUT I think they should be given! If a neighbor brought in your trash bins or mail while you were on vacation or maybe went out of their way to take care of something on your street, they should get a thank you note. It’s a simple way of thanking them! And if you feel extra thankful, go with a bottle of wine and a nice thank you gift tag.
